5 LAMB Blogs you should be reading

About a month back I became member of the LAMB (short for the Large Association of Movie Blogs). It’s a great resource for any aspiring critic or film lover with over 850 (!) blogs about movies. Unfortunately, aside from occasionally glancing at a few articles of other members and making a few rare comments here and there, I’ve never delved deep into my fellow LAMBs blogs to make a post showcasing the work of other excellent film bloggers and their efforts. Call it the Modest Movie curse – I always want other people to be reading the blog (I check the site stats an unhealthy amount of times during the day), but I don’t read the blogs of others enough. This post is going to change all that.

Because to be modest means to point out the great work of others, and sometimes having to admit (begrudgingly) that it’s better than your own.

Slacker Cinema

This is an amazing blog to check out for bizarre movie poster trends, great reviews, and obscure movies. This post looks at a hilarious trend in 2010 movie posters that you may not have realized, unique posters of the upcoming movie Super, and this gives viewers five reasons why Friends with Benefits looks like it will be a better movie than No String Attached (the best reason is the product placement). Also, you must watch these old Blockbuster training videos (with a guy named Buster who acts like Zordon from Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers).

The Movie Brothers

Read this: Five Technologies that Changed Movies Forever. It’s an informative post – you’ll finally know what Panaglide is (and realize how all those shots you like were done using this technology, at least in my case). There’s a review about Rubber, the killer tire movie everyone is talking about, and a post about the ten greatest movies ever made (which is debatable as always – lists are like that).

Faded Video Labels

This blog specializes in reviewing classic films with intelligence, wit, and fantastic prose. Read about The Abominable Dr. Phibes (1971), a film with Vincent Price as a deformed doctor seeking revenge on the surgeons who were unable to save his wife’s life, and the classic Hitchcock thriller Shadow of a Doubt (1943), with Joseph Cotten as a beloved uncle who may be moonlighting as a serial killer. Guaranteed – you’ll want to see these movies after reading the reviews.

Vegan Vorhees

A film blog devoted to the horror genre. Ever wanted a list of the absurd, deranged, and sometimes just plain idiotic motives of killers from the 90s? Read this. This blog also has special posts compiled entirely of awful horror movie dialogue (ex. Final Destination 2 (2006): “If Clear was right that means Nora and Tim are going to be attacked by pigeons.”). Start with the first volume, dedicated to lines that state the obvious.

“Let’s Not Talk About Movies”

Another blog of eloquent, verbose, and well thought out reviews (dammit!). My favorite posts are the ones that break down an entire scene with the script accompanying screen shots. The opening of The Social Network is a good one to look at, as well as this one from The Last Tycoon. Amazing stuff.

Read these blogs. You won’t regret it.

Note: To the authors of these blogs – your work is incredible. I sincerely hope that some of you are working in, or connected with, the film industry. Because if you aren’t, the rest of us have a snowball’s chance in hell of making it.

Very thoughtful of you to write such a supportive blog post about other bloggers.
