Netflix Canada Selection: 169 Films Worth Watching

EDIT: Check out the updated list for 2014 HERE!

EDIT: I’ve been told that a good portion of the films on this list have been taken off because of the fallout between some distributors with Netflix. If you are looking for a good Netflix Canada Selection list check out What’s New on Netflix or Instant Watcher.

Having just recently signed up for the Netflix Canada one-month free trial, I was surprised to find out that though the selection of movies is limited, there are still enough gems that it would be worth it to keep the service (at least for another couple of months).

The local movie store I go to facetiously calls Netflix “NetShitz” and rails against the corporate drivel that the service presumably shells out for $8 a month. This isn’t entirely correct. In fact, I scoured through the list and found 169 films on Netflix Canada’s selection that even a discerning cinephile should be able to appreciate (or at least find a handful they’re interested in).

NOTE: I haven’t seen all the movies on this list. Of those that I have, I liked. And of those that I haven’t, I’m interested in seeing. Also, the numbers don’t reflect a ranking system. This is just the order I found these movies in.

21 Responses to Netflix Canada Selection: 169 Films Worth Watching

  1. Leon Smith says:

Great selection, you know how to pick em

  2. Benoit Lauzon says:

Most excellent selection, indeed well worth watching. Unfortunately, I’ve seen the bulk of those and now I’m scouring the cheezy b-film section, which, sadly, is more z-grade direct to video and sequels to already so-so films (hardly one or two Corman films in there, not a good sign). Hopefully they’ll put some meat on the bone, the technology and service are great (got 7 more free trial days because of connection problems one evening, without me even complaining once, so that’s what I call very good business – Kudos for that, Netflix!). Anyways, I think I’ll check out Taken, based on your list, so thanks!

    • Modest Movie says:

Hey thanks for your comment! Taken is a solid action movie with Liam Neeson – hope you enjoy it. Netflix is a great service and the technology is there…I just wish they had a better selection (as most do) and that it wasn’t so difficult to browse their selection. I just finished my free trial and probably won’t sign up again for the next four to six months.

  3. Mark says:

It’s actually 168 films as you mentioned Primer twice. Good list, mostly R-rated films though. Would be nice to have a list of good family films.

  4. Alex says:

This is a helpful list, I saved it in my CINEMA favorites folder – congratulations!
You might want to add these ones:
    Live and Become
    Monsieur Ibrahim
    The Illusionist
    Mongol

Thanks – glad to know it’s been of help! Another great website for finding the latest Netflix Canada is New on Netflix. Just search it up on Google and it should be the first or second link – it’s awesome.

  5. mrloewen says:

If you’re looking for a good list of what is available for Netflix Canada, check out netflixcanadacompletelist.blogspot.com. It shows new arrivals, and a COMPLETE list of shows, ordered by release date and alpha. The regular Netflix interface leaves out a lot when you are just browsing…you have to actually search for specific items to find everything.

  6. cosmoholic says:

Do they remove offerings? I was excited to see Princess Bride on your list but it doesn’t show up on their website as an available title in Canada…

    • Modest Movie says:

Yes, they do remove offerings from time to time – probably have to renegotiate licenses and how much they pay for certain titles. Unfortunately, you don’t find out until a movie isn’t there. It may be back on in a few weeks or months though, so keep checking.

    • Animatic says:

A good number of the films on that list have been removed. I recently re-subscribed to Netflix.ca and was happy to see some “new” titles, but also was unhappy that a good portion of the films were removed. Unfortunately it includes *all* of the Criterion releases, and more probably from the Starz fallout over the summer.

It would be nice to see these titles return plus the inclusion of more titles, but I wouldn’t hold my breath. Unfortunately, Canadian movie distributors don’t see the value in licensing out their titles. They assume that Canadians don’t mind buying DVDs/Blu-Rays at store price, or paying for individual movie rentals through online retailers.

Oh well, 7.99 for one month’s worth of a few good films is better than nothing, I suppose.

  7. TOM VYSE says:

NOT ENOUGH WESTERNS FROM THE FIFTYS AND SO ON,ALSO SOME BIBICALS SUCH AS BEN -HUR,ROAD SHOWS,

  8. Darren says:

Half of of these are classics that should be on ANY list of movies to see, a few I would question as being worthwhile but that will be true of any list. For the most part this list is awesome and I found at least 30-40 titles I had not heard about that I have now added to my own queue. Thanks.

  9. moogie says:

I just wish they would have a complete list on their web site. It would make life so easier to choose what you want to see. Why won’t they put a full list somewhere…

  10. Jimmy W says:

This is really fantastic! Thank you so much! Any chance of an annual update?

  11. Kat says:

Hopefully someone can answer this. I have Canadian Netflix, however there’s a few movies on here that I don’t have. For example Taken, which I’ve originally seen when it came out, i’d love to watch it again, anyone know why my netflix doesn’t have it?

    • Modest Movie says:

      Hi Kat,

Movies on Netflix are licensed from the studios for a limited term. From what I’ve seen, it looks like most movies on Netflix are licensed for a year and then they expire until the license is renewed. It appears that “Taken” has expired but has not been renewed by the company, and I’m not sure when/if it will come back.

  12. Dick Patience says:

The list is a lot more extensive in the US. The Canadian list is quite pathetic

    • Todd says:

Ya great, thanks for that productive comment. If you count all the tv series on there there is enough to watch for a heck of a long time. I’ve been plowing through a lot of old series with my family – stuff like Buffy, Freaks and Geeks, Community, Breaking Bad… If the entertainment industry ever gets their head out of their butt and comes up with a better regional license policy for TV and movies I’m sure it will get even better. Value for money however Netflix is still waaaay better than cable for me – even in Canada.

  13. Sharon Pitts says:

Where is the rest of Dexter seasons 4, 5, and 6?

  14. ron bassler says:

I find the movie selection in netflix canada poor but the tv series are pretty good (breaking bad, dexter etc), some even are not in netflix US, see for example http://bestmoviescanada.com/
